I spend around 15 hours every week commuting to work. For some of you it might be more and for others lucky enough to work from the comfort of your own home in their favourite tracksuit bottoms, significantly less.
Is it a grind? It can be. Do I wish I could just teleport straight to the office? Of course because… TELEPORTATION! Do I hate it? Absolutely not! I thought I would but it turns out that I actually love it and here are 3 reasons why!
Doing the same journey every day with the same people means I probably spend more time with them than I do my 3 little boys. This means that, through overheard conversations, I know quite a lot about what makes them angry, frustrated and happy. In one very particular case, the packed carriage and I were treated to one lady’s horrendous story of what her husband does with his toenail clippings! I won’t repeat it here but it may have involved the family dog.
We don’t know each other’s names or where we work or what our hobbies are but we know that we are all in it together. If the train stops between stations, we collectively roll our eyes and patiently wait for an update. We are a team of complete strangers with one goal… Get to work and then get home with minimal delays.
As I mentioned, I have 3 young boys so at home I get to watch Paw Patrol, PJ Masks or Justin’s House. Once they’re in bed, I am faced with Grey’s Anatomy or whatever celebrity “talent” show is in season. Thank the heavens for Netflix and Amazon Prime!
My 70-minute train journey affords me the luxury of getting lost in whatever TV Show I am watching. Conventional episodes are around 43 minutes in length so with a couple of delays, I can sometimes squeeze in 2 episodes in one leg of the journey. That’s the dream right there!
I know there will come a time when I have watched everything worth watching but I also know that some of the shows I’ve watched are well worth enjoying again and again. How did people stomach the commute before the invention of smartphones?
My experiences with London have always been fleeting. Usually in and out on the same day for a concert, a football match or some kind of work party. Once that was finished, I would normally be so concerned with not missing the last train home, I wouldn’t notice how amazing London is.
Even at 8:30 in the morning there are crowds of tourists from all around the world taking selfies in front of Buckingham Palace. That’s a testament to the beauty and significance of the building and its surrounding statues and possibly because of the number of Pokemon Stops there are too.
The buskers are performing on a different level in London! I stopped to watch a scruffy looking guy with a beaten up guitar playing a note-perfect version of Someone Like You by Adele and there were people in the gathered crowd wiping away tears murmuring about how special it was. We all threw our change into his guitar case and went off to work knowing we’d seen something amazing.
So there it is. I may very well be in the minority but combined with the fact that I love my job, the journey to get here is pretty amazing too.

I have worked with That Recruit for the last four months to find suitable candidates for Abacare, our award winning care business. That Recruit recognise the need for our business to attract quality candidates to care for our service users in the comfort of their own home. I have found them to be helpful and reactive to our business needs and look forward to our continued working relationship.
Quantity of applicant received was tremendous. Required a lot of sifting but evident that the advert reached a broad spectrum of candidates.
We are happy with the service and quality of applicants.
We usually use recruitment agencies, however for this particular vacancy it seemed more appropriate to try a cheaper recruitment option. In setting up the initial advert it was very easy and quick, and the staff at ThatRecruit were very helpful and efficient in coming back to me and in authorizing the advert. The software to manage the vacancy was easy to use and the ability to mark candidates with a status was helpful. As an improvement it would be useful to be able to select all those marked as rejected and be able to bulk message them with a decline message or have an option to allow the candidates to see their status. Overall it’s been easy to manage this recruitment placement through ThatRecruit and we had an exceptional response to the advertisement with 72 applicants and having to close the advert early.
The process was easy to manage and we received a high number of responses.
Thanks again for your fantastic service don’t change anything it works great!
